Exercise Soothes Arthritis:Joint Effects

March 11, 2008 By: admin Category: Health Sciences, Veterinary Medicine

Abstract Disability from arthritis can be related to a lack of fitness. In this article questions about exercise posed by persons with arthritis are explored, including: “What kind of exercise program is best suited to my condition?” and “Does athletic activity promote arthritis?” (more…)

Adhesion and function of human endothelial cells co-cultured on smooth musclecells

March 11, 2008 By: admin Category: Health Sciences, Veterinary Medicine

Wallace,CS; Champion,JC; Truskey,GA

Abstract To evaluate interactions between human endothelial cells (ECs) and smoothmuscle cells (SMCs) for the development of tissue-engineered vessels, we examined the adhesion andkey cell properties of human ECs grown on quiescent human aortic SMCs. ECs attached to SMCs spreadmore slowly than ECs attached to fibronectin surfaces, and ECs aligned along the direction of theSMCs. (more…)

Optimal planar flow network designs for tissue engineered constructs withbuilt-in vasculature

March 11, 2008 By: admin Category: Health Sciences, Veterinary Medicine

Abstract Convective delivery of nutrients is important to enhance mass transportwithin tissue engineered (TE) products. Depending on the target tissue, an ideal TE product willhave an integrated microvasculature that will eliminate mass transport limitations that can occurduring product growth in vitro and integration in vivo. A synthetic approach to developmicrovasculature involves development of network designs with efficient mass transfercharacteristics. (more…)

T’ai Chi (Part 2):Effects on Health

March 11, 2008 By: admin Category: Health Sciences, Veterinary Medicine

Abstract This second article in our two-part series on T’ai Chi describes recent research on its health effects. Recent well-designed studies indicate that T’ai Chi practice can have a positive effect on the cardiovascular system and on balance and emotional health. Preliminary research even indicates that T’ai Chi may have a positive impact on the immune system. (more…)

Mechanical properties and compositions of tissue engineered and nativearteries

March 11, 2008 By: admin Category: Health Sciences, Veterinary Medicine

Dahl,SL; Rhim,C; Song,YC; Niklason,LE

Abstract With the goal of mimicking the mechanical properties of a given nativetissue, tissue engineers seek to culture replacement tissues with compositions similar to those ofnative tissues. In this report, differences between the mechanical properties of engineered arteriesand native arteries were correlated with differences in tissue composition. Engineered arteriesfailed to match the strengths or compliances of native tissues. (more…)

Pinch an Inch:A Comparison of Several High-Quality and Plastic Skinfold Calipers

March 11, 2008 By: admin Category: Health Sciences, Veterinary Medicine

Abstract Research studies have judged the accuracy of plastic calipers and high-quality calipers by comparing SKF thickness measurements from both. In this article, the authors look at research comparing the accuracy and characteristics of several makes of caliper. (more…)

Flow perfusion improves seeding of tissue engineering scaffolds withdifferent architectures

March 11, 2008 By: admin Category: Health Sciences, Veterinary Medicine

Alvarez-Barreto,JF; Linehan,SM; Shambaugh,RL; Sikavitsas,VI

Abstract Engineered bone grafts have been generated in static and dynamic systems byseeding and culturing osteoblastic cells on 3-D scaffolds. Seeding determines initial cellularityand cell spatial distribution throughout the scaffold, and affects cell-matrix interactions. Staticseeding often yields low seeding efficiencies and poor cell distributions; (more…)

Rethinking Sports Nutrition Advice for Women

March 11, 2008 By: admin Category: Health Sciences, Veterinary Medicine

Abstract The increased participation of females in sports brings attention to the nutritional needs of female athletes, which are different from those of males. In this article, the authors describe the differences between the nutritional needs of t (more…)
