Fine needle aspiration cytology determinants of the diagnosis of primarynodal Kaposi’s sarcoma as the first sign of unknown HIV infection:a case report.

April 12, 2008 By: admin Category: Environmental Science and Ecology, Life Sciences

BACKGROUND: Kaposi’s sarcoma (KS) is a vascular malignant tumor characterizedby human herpesvirus 8 infection of neoplastic cells. Diffuse cutaneous lesions represent theclassical clinical presentation. (more…)

Fine needle aspiration outcomes of masses detected by positron emissiontomography: correlation with standard uptake value

April 02, 2008 By: admin Category: Environmental Science and Ecology, Life Sciences

OBJECTIVES: To characterize the cytopathologic outcome of lesions detected onpositron emission tomography (PET) scan. STUDY DESIGN: Cases with fine needle aspiration (FNA)performed because of a PET-positive lesion over an 18-month period were reviewed. Correlation withthe standard uptake value (SUV) (more…)

Fine needle aspiration cytologic diagnosis of erythema nodosum leprosum: acase report

April 01, 2008 By: admin Category: Environmental Science and Ecology, Life Sciences

BACKGROUND: Erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL), the type 2 lepra reactionoccurring in lepromatous or borderline lepromatous leprosy, presents clinically with acutemanifestations that compel the patient to seek medical attention. Recognition and timely managementof these patients is critical in order to avoid permanent disability. Fine needle aspirationcytology (FNAC) is a simple, effective tool that aids in correct diagnosis and management of ENL.CASE: (more…)

Fine needle aspiration cytology of bone tumors

April 01, 2008 By: admin Category: Environmental Science and Ecology, Life Sciences

OBJECTIVE: To study the role of fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) in thediagnosis of bone tumors and its impact on therapeutic decisions. STUDY DESIGN: A group of 122cases of bone tumor were evaluated by FNAC. Detailed diagnoses were compared with the availablehistology. RESULTS: Diagnostic accuracy of FNAC was 90.5% in this study. Fine needle aspiration of poorly defined indurated and well-defined breastlesions:a cytopathologic comparative study.

April 01, 2008 By: admin Category: Environmental Science and Ecology, Life Sciences

OBJECTIVE: To compare the cytologic findings and diagnoses of breast fineneedle aspiration (FNA) samples of well-defined lesions (WDL) with those of poorly defined induratedlesions. STUDY DESIGN: We examined 371 consecutive breast FNA specimens obtained without diagnosticimage guidance. (more…)

Fine needle aspiration cytology of basal cell adenoma of the salivary gland

April 01, 2008 By: admin Category: Environmental Science and Ecology, Life Sciences

OBJECTIVE: To formulate cytologic features for differential diagnosis ofbasal cell adenoma (BCA). STUDY DESIGN: The usefulness of 5 items for a cytologically definitivediagnosis of BCA was examined. The 5 items in 8 BCA and 22 non-BCA cases (adenoid cystic carcinoma[ADCC], basal cell adenocarcinoma, myoepithelioma, pleomorphic adenoma and polymorphous low-gradeadenocarcinoma) that displayed mimicking cytology were examined cytologically. RESULTS: The usefulitems were (more…)

Fine needle aspiration biopsy for preoperative workup of pancreatic cystic neoplasms:report of 4 cases.

April 01, 2008 By: admin Category: Environmental Science and Ecology, Life Sciences

BACKGROUND: Cystic neoplasms of the pancreas comprise a pathologically heterogeneous group of lesions that usually present with similar, nonspecific clinical features. Based on the diagnosis, treatment varies from watchful observation of the lesion to total surgical resection of the pancreas. (more…)

Fine needle aspiration of follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma presenting with pleural effusion:a case report

April 01, 2008 By: admin Category: Environmental Science and Ecology, Life Sciences

BACKGROUND: Malignant pleural effusion in association with mesothelioma, bronchogenic carcinoma and breast carcinoma is common, although less frequently reported with other malignancies. We report a follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma (FVPTC), diagnosed on fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of thyroid and lymph nodes and subsequently proved to have metastasized to the pleural cavity. CASE: A 46-year-old man presented with history of breathlessness, thyroid swelling, pleural effusion and bilateral cervical lymphadenopathy. FNAC of the thyroid swelling and the lymph nodes showed features of FVPTC with cervical lymph node metastasis. (more…)
