Mobile telephones, distracted attention, and pedestrian safety

May 03, 2008 By: admin Category: Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Physical Sciences and Engineering

Driver distraction is a major cause of traffic accidents, with mobile telephones as a key source of distraction. In two studies, we examined distraction of pedestrians associated with mobile phone use. (more…)

Multicystic nephroma: a case report

April 12, 2008 By: admin Category: Environmental Science and Ecology, Life Sciences

BACKGROUND: Cystic nephroma is an uncommon pediatric renal neoplasm. It needsto be differentiated from cystic partially differentiated nephroblastoma and from other renalneoplasms showing extensive cystic change. (more…)

Mycobacterium kansasii infection diagnosed by pleural fluid cytology:a casereport

April 12, 2008 By: admin Category: Environmental Science and Ecology, Life Sciences

BACKGROUND: Identification of disseminated nontuberculous Mycobacteriuminfection is a challenge, especially when it occurs in patients without a known cause ofimmunosuppression. Acid-fast organisms in the pleural fluid are rare and easily missed, especiallywhen they occur in patients without a clinical suspicion of infection. (more…)

Multifocal nodular oncocytic hyperplasia in parotid gland:a case report

April 12, 2008 By: admin Category: Environmental Science and Ecology, Life Sciences

BACKGROUND: Multifocal nodular oncocytic hyperplasia (MNOH) is a rare lesionof the parotid gland. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) in MNOH has not been describedpreviously to the best of our knowledge. (more…)

Microscopic diagnosis of vulvovaginal candidiasis in stained vaginal smears by Dutch general practitioners.

April 01, 2008 By: admin Category: Environmental Science and Ecology, Life Sciences

OBJECTIVE: To determine the accuracy of the microscopic diagnosis of vulvovaginal candidiasis (presence of [pseudo] hyphae and blastospores) in stained vaginal smears in clinical practice. STUDY DESIGN: General practitioners trained in diagnosing vulvovaginal candidiasis performed microscopy of 324 stained vaginal smears. (more…)

Multivariate objective response detectors (MORD):statistical tools formultichannel EEG analysis during rhythmic stimulation

March 11, 2008 By: admin Category: Health Sciences, Veterinary Medicine

Abstract The presence of cerebral evoked responses can be tested by using objectiveresponse detectors. They are statistical tests that provide a threshold above which responses can beassumed to have occurred. The detection power depends on the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of theresponse and the amount of data available. However, the correlation within the background noisecould also affect the power of such detectors. (more…)

Mechanical properties and compositions of tissue engineered and nativearteries

March 11, 2008 By: admin Category: Health Sciences, Veterinary Medicine

Dahl,SL; Rhim,C; Song,YC; Niklason,LE

Abstract With the goal of mimicking the mechanical properties of a given nativetissue, tissue engineers seek to culture replacement tissues with compositions similar to those ofnative tissues. In this report, differences between the mechanical properties of engineered arteriesand native arteries were correlated with differences in tissue composition. Engineered arteriesfailed to match the strengths or compliances of native tissues. (more…)
